Toy Pix: 1989 Batmobile 1:64 scale, Then and Now

You might remember the Then and Now article from a few months ago featuring the 1989 Batmobile in 1:43 scale. Let's follow that up with these Burtonmobiles in Hot Wheels scale! Mattel has done a good job releasing a bunch of different Batmobiles in its Hot Wheels and Matchbox lines, and this newest one (above, right) is actually just a retread of the Batmobile first released in 2004. But hey, it's new to me! Let's take a look at how it compares with the 1989 Ertlmobile!

Batmobile (Ertl, 1989)

The various Ertl Batmobiles were pretty awesome back in the day, with screen-accurate detailing and proportions. Ertl was obsessed with putting the Batsymbol on the roof for some reason, but I can live with it. As I mentioned before, I actually kind of dig it.

This Batmobile is a little bigger than the Hotwheels version, so I'm not sure it's truly 1:64 scale. But this is a toy that really holds up really well, even 24 years after its release.

Batmobile (Mattel, 2013)

And here we see the Hot Wheels version of the 1989 Batmobile! Sticklers for movie accuracy will likely be disappointed, unfortunately. You'll notice that the tires are out of proportion and the curvilinear lines and shapes are more than a little exaggerated. It's an interesting design, but I prefer the more accurate Ertl toy. Still, it's a 1989 Batmobile, it's on the shelves (if you can find it) and it's only a buck. Not too shabby, if you ask me. Happy hunting!

  1. ERTL definitely looks better. ERTL makes them just like the real thing, only smaller!
