Toy Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 (Playmates)

When Peter Laird announced that he had sold the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property to Nickelodeon, I was pretty trepidacious. What would happen to my beloved Turtles? But Peter, after he bought out Kevin Eastman's ownership rights, had a great run with the 200X cartoon and the Volume IV comics. It seemed like he finally explored everything he wanted to with the property, so I was eager to see what some new blood could do. And when I saw the new 2012 action figures from Playmates, I was excited about this new direction for the Turtles. Let's check them out!

Like most TMNT figures, the 2012 toys are pretty different from the cartoon designs they're supposed to represent. (Think about it... besides the TMNT movie Turtles and the new Classic Turtles, the toys tend to not really look much like their respective cartoons.) These action figures have different feet, more realistic detailing, and designs that are far less geometric. But that's okay, the more realistic designs actually look better than the cartoon.

The body proportions harken back to the old Mirage comics (bulky feet and forearms with comparatively scrawny upper arms and neck). It should be lauded that each Turtle has a completely unique body sculpt that reflects the character's personality and body size: Don is the tallest, Mike the shortest, with Raph and Leo in the middle. Even the shells are completely different. This attention towards unique sculpting makes the figures seem like individuals rather than the same old figure with different paint apps (like you'd see in MOTUC and DCUC).

The face sculpts are similarly awesome, capturing each Turtle's personality well. I would argue that Mikey should have a goofy smile, but hey, I can live with it as it is. Don's head sculpt is my favorite, which seems to be a recurring theme for me and TMNT figures.

The paint apps are pretty good. The prototypes have nice paint washes that really bring out the detailing in the sculpts, but the paint apps of the production figures work well enough. It should also be praised that each Turtle has a different color scheme, not only in regards to his bandana, but also in the greenness of his plastic and the wrappings on his hands and feet.

The articulation is exactly what it needs to be. The Turtles are articulated at their necks (ball-socket), shoulders (swivel-hinge), elbows (swivel-hinge), wrists (swivel), hips (swivel-hinge), and knees (swivel-hinge). Hyper-articulation enthusiasts would probably want more, but more articulation would just screw up the sculpt and lead to quality control issues (I'm looking at you, NECA Turtles). This articulation is perfect for toys that are meant to be played with rather than collector's figures that spend the bulk of their existences sporting the collector's favored pose on a shelf.

Each Turtle comes with his own signature weaponry and a rack with a bunch of additional weapons. Not only are the extra weapons fun and appropriate to the Turtle, but also the whole rack idea harkens back to the vintage figures. It's a nice touch.

These Turtles clock in at $10 each at Big Bad Toy Store. The quality justifies that price, but you should be able to get them for about $8 at big box stores.

Honestly, these are probably my favorite TMNT figures of all time. And that's saying something, considering how awesome the NECA and Mystic Fury figures are. But the TMNT line of 2012 perfectly blends great toy-like designs, awesome sculpts, and sweet accessories into an unstoppable force of Turtle Power!

(Dork Dimension historians may want to note that the Turtles join an illustrious group of only four other toys - out of 122 reviews total - that got this close to a perfect all-5 score: Starship Legends Enterprise D, Clone Wars Chewbacca, vintage TMNT Casey Jones, and vintage TMNT Muckman.)

"these are probably my favorite TMNT figures of all time"

I will just keep things simple by echoing that sentiment! Also wanted to say I loved the comic book image!

Great review of these figures. I love the weapons rack. They are a great blend of the vintage toys and the neck look. I think you have to get your hands on the classic line before claiming these as your fave tmnt toys....

Great review! I'm so pumped about these new toys I feel like a kid again. Bring on series 2!

Over the last week I've read (and watched) piles of reviews. You're the only one so far who's mentioned stuff like the (favorable) incongruity with the CGI models, Mirage-esque proportions and the focus on actual playability. Well done, man.

What caused you deduct a point for value, though? Most others are extremely satisfied with the price for what they're getting. Just about anyone else would likely have only held back one point for articulation noting that the elbows and knees don't quite reach 90 degree bends.

@ShezCrafti: Thanks! :) I had to Photoshop Leo's right leg to get it to bend like that, but other than that, the Turtles are au naturale.

@Steve: I'll definitely pick those up as soon as I see them. They look like great figures, but the 2012 figures have set the bar pretty high.

@garsh: I aim to please. ;) I don't really think of a score of 4 as having a point deducted. I consider a score of 3 as average, meaning it's acceptably on par with other figures at the same price point. Points are added for figures that are better than average (4) or exceptional (5). Points are deducted for figures that are a little worse than average (2), mediocre (1) or completely unacceptable (0).

So, this score of 4 has a point added to the average, in this case because these are quality figures with great accessories. But I don't think that a $10 price tag justifies a 5. If I got these for $8, I might have pushed the score up, and anything under $8 would definitely have been a 5.

I love these figures! I am really glad to see playmates putting out some really incredible sculpts...kind of reminds me of the original line.
I bet we'll get a goofy-faced Mikey down the line, but for now I like the serious expression because it reminds me of the mirage comics more.

I'll definitely pick up Metalhead when he comes out in a couple of months. Can't wait to see the new take on Casey Jones, and Fugitoid ( if Nickelodeon have rights to Fugitoid?).

The figures themselves are perfect in everyway. But the weapon quality could have been better. The weapons feel oftly fragile during play, and Mikey's chucks will retain ugly stress marks after you try and put them in his belt the way they were meant to be.

My first Raph's wrists were literally locked tight out of the package, and in a vain attempt to get the swivels loose I tore the socket off one wrist trying to get the hand to pop back on...not that this plastic was shoddy quality by any means. But even with my experience breaking loose stuck joints on dozens and dozens of figures, even using hot water, the strain trying to wrestle the hand back onto the peg resulted in it tearing off. :D

My second Raph was just fine though.

I'm definitely investing in a couple of these guys! Sweeeet!

@URS: That's a good point about the weapons. I accidentally bent one of Leo's swords while putting it in his hand for one of the pics, so now it has a stress mark where the handle meets the blade. That's always been a problem with Leo's swords, though (as well as the weapons for the other Turtles, with the exception of Don).

I so wanted to pick up all four of these guys this past weekend! But I did come home with Donnie and Leo. TRU had every figure and vehicle, but none of the figures in this scale. Thank God for Target! I plan on at least opening Donnie tonight, to play with and review. This line should be all sorts of cool! And the next wave is going to have Metalhead, which is a must buy(for me anyway). Great write-up, and pics!

I just got all 4 of these and am really loving them! I think Playmates hit a homerun with these.

I've got all four on the way from BBTS, and I can't wait; I dig the Neca Turtles and I admire the Classics for what they are, the CGI movie figures are underrated and I regret not keeping the four turtles from the 2003 cartoon, but these new figures are already my all-time favorites and I haven't even seen them in person yet.

I was pleased that Poe Ghostal favored these over the Classics, as I expect nostalgia to lead many a fan to favor Classics over the Nick figures for no good reason.

I love the photos you used to compliment the review; the comparison shots are particularly appreciated.

Nathan Newell said...

@Jason: I'll be interested to see what the new Metalhead design is like. If anybody has seen any pics online, feel free to post the URL here.

@Monte: I can see why some people would like the Classics figures better. They have more articulation and a vintage cartoon style that they might prefer if the classic cartoon is how they think of the Turtles. As to my preference... I'll be posting a review of a Classic Collection Turtle this weekend, so stay tuned. ;)

For some reason I can't find the pic of the design card behind him again.

@URS: Thanks for the link! He looks awesome!

I like the head sculpt of the prototype better, but it looks like a pretty cool figure regardless.

Great review, love the new look of the Turtles. Had to get my hands on them but seeing as the release date here in Ireland is December 1st I had to pick them up on Ebay for about 50 Euro which was about 65 Dollars.

Now you might think I'm nuts for spending so much but I'm actually getting them cheaper than I would have here, seeing as over here they will be sold for 13 to 14 Euros.
To be honest though I only save 6 quid, but I want them bad.

Gonna go great with my Neca ones.

I was looking for a actual life size weapon to give my son. But every web site I have checked only has them for the doll, but does anyone know where I could get them

Nathan said...

@Anonymous: I assume you're talking about the role playing toys. I saw them a lot before Christmas, but it seems like the holiday season wiped out the stock. We'll have to wait until the retailers reset the toy aisles, which is often as late as February.
