For this week's League of Extraordinary Bloggers assignment, Brian asked us to take a picture of something green. This type of open-ended assignment seems simple, but the endless possibilities make it more complex than you might think. After some deliberation, I decided to take a picture of this green 2.5" Godzilla from Bandai's Godzilla History Set depicting his appearance in 1962's Godzilla vs. King Kong.Waitaminute, you might say. Despite popular opinion, Godzilla wasn't green in the movies, he was actually charcoal grey. That's true, and why we tend to think that he's green is anyone's guess. Maybe because some of the American movie posters, toys, and cartoons feature a green Godzilla, we just assume he's green in the movies too.
But waitaminute again. Godzilla wasn't always charcoal grey. In Godzilla 2000, he definitely had green skin, probably to appeal to American movie goers since the movie was released in US theaters. Other than that (and the sequel that used the same suit, Godzilla vs. Megaguirus), Godzilla has always been the same old charcoal grey. And the coloration in Godzilla vs. King Kong seems to be no exception. It's difficult to say for sure given the discoloration of the film from aging, but if I were a betting man, I'd say it's definitely not green. Other figures depicting the 1962 Godzilla are also charcoal-colored.
And yet, this Godzilla is green. Bandai Japan is usually a stickler for detail, especially in regards to Godzilla. Why they insisted on green for this figure is anyone's guess... but I kind of dig it.
Finally, here's a comparison shot of Godzilla with an OMFG figure for scale... which of course also must be green in accordance with the assigment.
