Toy Review: Green Lantern Movie Voz and G'Hu (4"-scale)

Although the 4" Green Lantern movie figures were almost universally panned, I loved them. There was something about them that was inescapably toy-like, much more so than the supposedly “better” lines like Thor and Captain America. Besides, the alien designs were some of the coolest I had seen in years.  That added up to a line that was a load of fun... for this collector, at least.

But the figures languished on the shelves and I began to doubt that I’d see the later waves at all. Fortunately, I managed to pick up what will probably be the last two figures from the Corps in the 4" scale, Voz and G’Hu. (Edit: The last will probably be Salaak; see URS' comment below.) So how are they? If you've been reading the Green Lantern reviews here on the Dork Dimension, much of what follows will sound pretty familiar.

Like the others in the line, the paint apps on Voz and G’Hu are lacking but the sculpts are pretty strong. Voz is my favorite of the two because his character design reminds me a lot of the super-cool prehistoric ground sloth. G’Hu has a design that seems like it’s straight from a cliched 90’s sci-fi movie. Yet another spindly alien with head tentacles? Yawn.

Articulation for this line isn’t its strongest suit. G’Hu has only 5 points of articulation (swivel neck, shoulders, and hips), but the figure can still move relatively well. Unfortunately, G'Hu doesn't have the ball-hinge shoulders that most of the other Green Lantern movie figures have. But Voz is an articulation disaster at 4 measly points of articulation (swivel shoulders, hips) and a sculpt that seriously limits movement.

As with the other Lantern figures, these dudes come with rubbery green constructs... as well as those ubiquitous Green Lantern rings, of course. G’hu's construct is a cool sci-fi laser, and Voz's is an “energy blast” that you connect to other constructs. It's the exact same accessory that came with Kilowog, Max Charge Kilowog, and Hannu, and at at this point its coolness is seriously wearing thin. Still, the size of the figures and their constructs make them a pretty good value at $7-$8, and you might be able to even find them on sale these days.

As the last movie figures from the Green Lantern Corps in this scale, I wish G’hu and Voz were a better send-off for the line. They fill out the Corps pretty well, but they’re not nearly the best the line has to offer.

Ratings and Summary

APPEARANCE: Nice sculpts, but where are the paint apps?
Voz
G’Hu

ARTICULATION: Both fall sort of today's articulation standards, but Voz falls far short.

G’Hu

ACCESSORIES: I have Voz's energy blast four times over now. At least G'Hu comes with a cool laser construct.

G’Hu

VALUE: Between the figures and the constructs, you get a lot of plastic for your $7-$8. You might even find these guys on sale.

COOLNESS: Voz resembles an awesome prehistoric ground sloth alien. You'll feel like you've seen G'Hu countless times before if you watched any sci-fi movies during the 90's.

I was looking forward to Voz, and was a little disappointed when I got him. If any figure would have benefited from the ball hinged shoulders he would have. I still like the figure, and even bought the neat Light Up version as well. He is still one of my favorites despite his articulation. He is what you would expect a Wookie may look like as a lantern. :P

Sadly there was one more Lantern in this line, Salaak, who got the shaft for single pack release. So the only way to get him would be to buy the Leaders of the Corps Target 4 pack. Which is only worth it if you don't already have the other 3. Though I'm keeping my eye out for it to hit a nice clearance price.

Also, if folks are interested in this line, but want em cheap, check your Wal-Marts. I saw them for $1.50 each the other day! You won't be able to beat that anywhere.

I saw a Salaak prototype on eBay a while back, but I didn't hear anything more about it so I totally forgot. I didn't know it would be released in a 4-pack, so thanks for mentioning it! Although it includes figures I already have, I've invested so much in this line that I'll probably get it anyway just so I have a complete collection. Besides, I'm sure I can probably find it on sale.

Lol, a dollar-fifty. After that terrible movie it's no surprise. I imagine the studio execs thinking they were gonna get rich off that sorry excuse for entertainment. At least they are some interesting-looking figures.

Yeah, Alot of folks totally missed his release. I even walked in and glanced down at the 4 packs once and didn't even see him. It wasn't till I went home and tried to look up a checklist for them that I saw Salaak in the list.

Hey, I like the new Toy Review format, with the text, summary and images grouped into sections. I also like the new Intergalactic Ratings Scale graphics. Regarding the Green Lantern toys, I suppose I'm not so fond of them... But at $1.50 apiece, they do make excellent Nerf gun targets! ;)

Yeah, I really like the new format as well!

Thanks! I'm glad you all like the new format! It's much easier and quicker to write because I don't have to break things up and worry about where to put the pictures and stuff.

@URS: I picked up Salaak this past weekend. The whole 4-pack was on sale for $8! Not too shabby.

Good score Nathan. Sadly I must have missed their Clearance, as they were still 29.99 when I stopped by today. Yucky!

Did pick up a couple Hal Jordans I'd been contemplating for $1.50. :P

Stay frosty, I'm sure they'll hit clearance eventually. You also might want to check out other Targets to see what they have on clearance.

Mace Windu head + extra green lantern from Salaak 4 pack = John Stewart that we can get no other way. Stel can be an ice skating praying mantis NFL robot.
