Mini Toy Review: Green Lantern Max Charge Kilowog

Green Lantern Week

Day 3 of the Green Lantern Week features Max Charge Kilowog in all his Jello goodness! Not only does the clear green plastic look awesome, it also has a wonderful rubbery smell that makes you wish you had a box full of Max Charge Kilowogs to open up periodically, like aroma therapy for the toy collector. Sadly, the smell dissipates over time, so sniff away while you can.

There isn't much in the way of paint apps for Kilowog, which is okay because they would just cover up the clear plastic that's the main selling point of the figure. Part of the fun of clear plastic is being able to see the insides of the figure like the articulation points, of which Kilowog doesn't have nearly enough (only swivel neck, waist and hips, along with ball-hinge shoulders).

Kilowog comes with a role playing Green Lantern ring and if you've been collecting this scale, you probably already have a crapload of them by now. He also comes with an energy blast that not only looks cool, but you can also use it to connect to the energy constructs of other figures. That, along with the substantial size of the figure, makes his $7-$8 price tag reasonable.

This dude is a must-buy for fans of smelly clear plastic.

I’m heartbroken that GL wasn’t a wilder success, because these toys were an unquestionable hit with my 4 year old. Every GL toy he owns, he loves. The GL universe is such a fertile ground for toys I’d love for the brand to stay on the shelf for years.

Not only are there cool aliens, monsters, and powers but the GL toys can integrate with so many, if not every, other toylines with ease.

And lastly, they are just great toys. Toy collectors are the first to long for the bygone era of toys. The figures could have come out in the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s. They marry all the playability collectors remember with really sound modern design.

I’d give every figure, toy, playset, etc. a 5 out of 5.

I agree that these are some of the most fun action figures I've gotten in a while. I love all the crazy greenness of a display with a dozen or so Lanterns. And you're right, kids seem to really dig the line.

I'm not sure if I would give the transforming construct figures good reviews, though. Those things really look like they suck.

But that ImagiNext Oa playset looks too awesome to pass up, even though I don't collect that scale. I'll definitely get it if it goes on sale.

Love this figure. I like your last photo as well with the SDCC Kilowog. You should have posed him like he was making a construct of himself. :P

These clear figs would have been a perfect opportunity for some glow in the dark, or light up features.

I agree, they should have done something with a GITD feature. There are some GL figures that have light up features, but they're Target exclusives and only the lantern on their chest lights up. Still, I think they look great and I've been waiting for them to go on clearance.

I've been thinking about getting a half dozen or so of these Max Charge Kilowogs so that Kilowog could have his own construct militia. :)

Are the transforming construct figures the ones that flip open?

If so, don't knock them. They may not look great, but they play perfectly! Granted for a 4 year old just figuring it out is a big deal, but all the flipping and shooting really built in a lot of playability.

Okay, maybe I'll pick up some of those, too. (Again, on clearance.) I like the coloration of a lot of the figures that are included, but I was always turned off by the weird transforming constructs. But if they're fun, I'm all in.
