I'd rank both Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles up there with the best "junk" cereals ever. I think it's because the thin rice flakes work perfectly to maintain that high ratio of sugary flavoring to rice cereal that makes them so insanely delicious. So when I saw Cupcake Pebbles cereal at Wal-Mart earlier this week, I knew that it would be perfect for reviewing on the Dork Dimension. Let's check it out!
APPEARANCE

Cupcake Pebbles look like thin whitish Rice Krispies with little flecks of confetti. It's a cool look that sufficiently captures the party theme, but it needs more. A theme as decadent as "cupcake cereal" is just begging for some sort of over-the-top sugary appearance. Maybe a stronger color like pink would have worked better.
TASTE

When you open the box, you're bombarded with a delicious frosting smell that makes you want to scarf cupcakes for breakfast. Alas, the taste comes up short. Don't get me wrong, the taste is actually pretty good: it's sweet without being so sweet that it makes you want to retch. But it just doesn't exude the frosting flavor that I was expecting from the smell.
TEXTURE

Pebbles are never high-achievers in terms of texture. The thinness of the rice flakes absorbs the milk almost instantaneously on contact. You'll likely want to apply the milk conservatively to keep the cereal crunchy.
ORIGINALITY

There aren't too many party-themed cereals out there, although I have seen a few "limited time" party cereals like this one. The theme allows for some cross-functional use as you can not only munch on it for breakfast, but you can also add it as toppings for party cakes. In fact, the box has a recipe for a "Giant Cupcake" that sounds fun.
OVERALL

Cupcake Pebbles is not too sugary and has a sweet party taste, but it just doesn't taste enough like cake frosting to nail the theme. And it's not nearly as delicious as the classic Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles. But it's pretty cool variation on the Pebbles theme, and cereal box collectors in particular will want to pick it up for the colorful illustration of Pebbles and Bam-Bam.

Excellent review and great choice for the Dork Dimension's first cereal review! I didn't even know these were out. I'll probably pass on the Cupcake Pebbles but this review has inspired me to pick up a box of Fruity Pebbles the next time we're out at Wal-Mart!
Hey, this is a fun idea. I've walked past this box several times as I search cereal boxes for toys (where are my cereal toys?) and I've almost been tempted to try these. I do love Fruity Pebbles, but I don't really eat any cereals these days.
oh man, despite your review, i'm really tempted to try these! i almost ate my cupcake-scented candle one time. so basically, im a huge fan of cupcakes.
thanks for the review!
