Cool Cards: Creature Collaboration & Costume Design (Topps Star Wars Galaxy)

Back in 1993, Star Wars was a pretty dormant property. There were no new toys to speak of (unless you count Action Masters and Bendies) and new movies or TV shows seemed like impossible dreams. So when Topps released its Star Wars Galaxy cards that year, they were an oasis of Star Wars euphoria. I became a regular customer at the local collectible card shop, buying up as many packs as I could afford. The cards were a celebration of Star Wars featuring cool art, behind-the-scenes production designs, and multi-national posters. In a time before the Internet was a common fixture on our society, the information gleaned from these cards was invaluable.

In honor of the recent Jabba's Rancor w/ Luke Jedi toy review, this episode of Cool Cards features preliminary production designs of the Rancor creature and Luke's Jedi costume. Although I love the finished design of the Rancor, this sketch is pretty awesome, too. I wish they incorporated it into Jabba's Palace as a background alien. And I have to admit that I actually like this Luke Jedi costume design better than the finished product. The padding on the shoulders is a cool homage to Vader's costume.

That Rancor design became an alien race in the expanded universe, called Essoomians. There's one in the S.N.E.S. "Return of the Jedi" game too.
