Cool Cards: Punch-Out King Hippo (Nintendo Game Packs)

Back in the late 80's, Topps released a series of Nintendo cards called Game Packs to take advantage of the hyperactive Nintendo-mania of the time period. Interestingly enough, you could play scratch-off games on the cards featuring your favorite Nintendo heroes! In this Punch-Out game, you scratch off the sliver bubbles, which reveal the actions of either you or Hippo, until somebody drops. The Game Packs also included stickers like the one above.

The rules of the game were outlined on the back of the scratch game cards. And on the sticker backs were "Top Secret Tips", like the one above. But what kind of tip is that? It's basically saying "The way to beat enemies is to let them beat you."

You don't actually win anything by playing the scratch game, but the concept is pretty cool because it makes the cards more interactive. On the other hand, if you play the game, your card isn't mint anymore because you've scratched off the bubbles. Quite the conundrum.

Wow. I had completely forgotten about these until I read this post. For the life of me I cannot remember what game I remember having cards for (it wasn't Tyson), but I SOOOOO remember those little scratch-off circles. Thanks for the memory-jarring post :)

I remember buying a ton of these packs from Barry Drugs. I think it's a pretty sound concept for trading cards. It gives children a lotto-like game to play, plus stickers, and "tips." While there is some room to improve, I think this kind of set is great for kids!

I found the site below, which has all of the stickers. I have to admit, as a kid I would have traded pretty heavily to collect the Linda sticker.
