Lazer Tag was one of those Holy Grail toys when I was a kid. It was so expensive that I couldn't hope to get it, but it was a toy that I put on a pedestal as the epitome of awesomeness. I loved the design of the gun and helmet. They definitely exhibit the sharp, geometric shapes of 80s toys. They also kind of reminded me of the character designs in Tron. In fact, the game itself is sort of like something that you might imagine existing in the Tron universe.
Who knows if it actually worked well. And who knows if shooting "lasers" towards people's eyes is a good idea or not. But I didn't care... my perception of Lazer Tag's greatness outweighed anything else.
Check out the commercial below. It certainly has a Running Man feel to it. Also, check out the hair on some of the female warriors... yikes!
The above comic ad was presented in G.I. Joe #55.

5 out of 5 - Simply incredible!
4 out of 5 - Pretty awesome!
3 out of 5 - Cool enough, I suppose.
2 out of 5 - Not quite good enough.
1 out of 5 - Pretty horrific!
0 out of 5 - No redeeming quality at all.

I remember these, I often make references to Lazer Tag in my daily conversations. :P I remember the commercial as well, what fun. :D I actually had a few of the guns when I was younger that I got from the fleamarkets. They were neat, but I don't think the game was fun as they made it sound. I recall playing Lazer Tag at an fun park once....boring. :( They wouldn't let you run, and there were tiny kids running up to you shooting you all the time whether they could or not. :D You couldn't fire if your chest light was fritzing, and half of the available guns or packs didn't even work.
I played it once (in 1992, I think) and it was incredibly fun. I wish it had been more of a thing. And yeah, it always made me think of "Tron," even though I don't think anybody in "Tron" ever once used a laser gun.
My friend had a set when we were kids. It was pretty dull when it was just the two of us. You probably needed at least four or more kids to have fun.
However I played Laser Tag at a Laser Tag place once in high school and it was awesome! I went there thinking it was a terrible idea, but it was insanely fun.
