Comic Book Review: Star Trek Countdown #2

They're doing something right marketing this Star Trek movie. This Star Trek Countdown series is so popular that this is the second time in as many issues that I've picked up the last copy on the stands. It looks like fans are really enthusiastic about the new movie. So what does Star Trek Countdown #2 tell us?

I'll skip commenting on the art and dialogue. Nothing in these categories has changed from the last issue, and if you're curious, read more in my review of issue #1. Let's get down to business:

Plot:
When we last left Spock and Nero, their ship was boarded by Remans. Captain Data, in true deus ex machina fashion, arrives on the scene in the Enterprise E. (For more details, see the review of issue #1.)

In this issue, Data thwarts the Remans and saves the day. While the Reman attack damaged the Romulan ship so it can't mine, our heroes will still have enough decalithium (to create the black hole that will swallow up the Hobus nova threatening Romulus) if they swipe it from the Remans. While the Enterprise assists in repairs of the Romulan mining ship, the Romulan crew is invited aboard the Enterprise as guests. Nero gets access to the Federation databases where he first learns of Kirk. Meanwhile, Data reveals to Spock that the Hobus nova also threatens the Federation and the Enterprise is authorized to sneak into Romulan space and try to prevent it.

The Romulan Council realizes that Spock was right about the Hobus star and begins evacuations. They suspect Spock will take his technology to the Vulcans, so they propose war on Vulcan.

Spock, Nero, and the Enterprise go to Vulcan (where they meet Ambassador Picard... small universe) to try to procure the red matter technology they need to create the black hole.

The Vulcans realize the threat of the Hobus star, but they are suspicious of the Romulans and refuse to share the technology. While Spock and Picard stay to try to see the plan through, Nero splits to try to save his wife. As he leaves, Nero warns Spock that if Romulus dies, he will hold the Vulcans responsible.

Of course, everyone's too late. The Hobus star goes nova before Nero can get to Romulus.

What does this tell us about the movie?
Nero's motive might be one of revenge. He blames the Vulcans for their lack of assistance and he likely blames Spock. He might try to go back in time to exact his revenge upon a young Spock. Or, maybe he thinks that if Spock died in the past, then Nero would never have gone on that mission with him and he would have been around to save his wife before the Hobus star exploded.

Or, maybe Nero tries to destroy the star in the past and the USS Kelvin gets in the way.

Nero also first learns of Kirk in this issue. I'm not sure if that will be important to the overall plot of the movie, though.

As a side note, Latino Review revealed that The Next Generation cast might be included in a scene in the new movie. Sweet!

Overall: 3.5/5
The plot this time was a bit repetitive since we already went through the political buffoonery in the last issue. Data's "resurrection" was explained in that his programming basically replaced B-4's. Meh. But it was cool to see the Next Generation characters and the comic does its job well, which was to set up the movie. I can't wait to see the next issue!
