With the recent series finale of the new Battlestar Galactica, I thought this comic ad would be fun. It features the vintage Mattel Battlestar Galactica line, with a mailaway offer for a gold Cylon Centurian Leader! The new series has definitely influenced the way I see the old characters. I look at this ad nowadays and see Starbuck as a dude, which is just... weird. But it's also cool to see old favorites like the classic Cylon. I loved the figure because of the vac-metalized armor. I also thought the Ovion figure was cool, just because he was a odd bug man. And of course Daggit was awesome; being a cross between R2-D2 and an Ewok, he was a character truly ahead of his time.
Speaking of Daggit, where was he in the new series? Maybe Jake was supposed to fill that role... or, maybe Jake was a doggy skin-job!
Check out the commerical below from tvdays.com!
This week's comic ad comes from Shogun Warriors #9.

5 out of 5 - Simply incredible!
4 out of 5 - Pretty awesome!
3 out of 5 - Cool enough, I suppose.
2 out of 5 - Not quite good enough.
1 out of 5 - Pretty horrific!
0 out of 5 - No redeeming quality at all.

Is there anything that kids of the 70's and 80's miss more than a mailaway figure?
Yeah, the only company that I know of that still does mailaways is DST with their Star Trek line. And the mailaway offer is only when you buy DVDs.
Hm... that might be a good topic for a rant. ;)
Recent mailaways:
Gi Joe did an Unmasked Storm Shadow in the Valor VS Venom days.
Star Wars had Captain Rex, in the Clone Wars.
In reality, knowing more about the toy business now than I did when I was a kid, I can see how they could get away with the mailaways, and still have it be profitable.
I think that the amount of work that has to go into it is what makes it prohibitive these days. And massive theft - Toymania has had numerous reports of people essentially stealing the BAF out of the new DC Classics figures. I can only imagine people stealing UPC codes from items for free toys.
