Comic Ad of the Week 12: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Playmates

I thought this ad was appropriate given this year is the 25th anniversary of TMNT. I believe this was the first ad for the Turtle toys. Appropriately enough, the ad ran in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1.

At first I thought the illustration, illustrated by TMNT legends Peter Laird and Lavinge Brown, might have been produced before the prototypes were finalized as they don't seem particularly representative of the figures. But on closer inspection you'll notice that the skin colors are dead-on with the figures, and figure-specific details like Raph's sai holsters are present. It's a cool little ad from the early days of the TMNT phenomenon.

A cursory search of YouTube brings up a lot of Playmates TMNT commercial gems. For example:

Why are we happy? We just lost our lunch!

Fugitoid, Triceraton, and Slash!

Break-fighting Raphael looks like he has the lamest action feature... ever. That is most decidedly NOT wacky.

Nice commercials. I'm glad that there was someone back in the day who decided that these old commercials may be important to somebody one day. :)

Yeah, I was surprised to see how many of these old TMNT commercials survived.
