Toy Review: DC Universe Wonder Woman by Mattel

I'm sort of a n00b with Wonder Woman. I dig her colorful costume and her mythology as one of the big three in the DC Universe, so I've recently started reading her comics. I was glad to hear that she would be part of the super-cool Four Hoursemen DC Universe line and I was eager to see what they would do with the character.


But distribution of the DCU figures has been an absolute debacle. I'm not sure who's to blame, Mattel or the retailers, but I totally missed wave 3 and was giving up on wave 4. Shockingly, I actually found wave 4 figures on the pegs last weekend. So is Wonder Woman worth all the hub-bub, bub? Read on!

Looks: 3/5
Sometimes sculptors have difficulty catching a decent female likeness, but not the Four Horsemen. The head sculpt is great with nice proportions and hair details. The paint apps are sharp too.

But let's not get too complacent. Although the body proportions are good, she does looks a bit on the emaciated side with her somewhat spindly limbs. This is supposed to be Wonder Woman... she can't be a Paris Hilton-esque waif.

The hip articulation, which is usually a problem point for female figures, is hidden amazingly well. But the shoulders aren't: the ball-in-socket articulation stands out like a sore thumb. There are also some creases on the legs that are prominent, making the figure look somewhat sloppy.

Like all DCU figures, Wonder Woman has a wide range of articulation: ball neck, ball shoulders, swivel upper arms, hinge elbows, swivel wrists, hinge chest, ball hips, swivel thighs, hinge knees, and hinge ankles (18 points in all). Unfortunately, the hair restricts the neck movement, but that can be expected.

Accessories: 4/5
It looks like Mattel is finally decking out DC Universe figures with cool accessories. WW comes with a great axe and shield, both of which have a decidedly WW flavor to them. She also comes with a BAF leg, which is cool if you're collecting the whole set. But I'm not buying a bunch of scrubs just for another figure's parts, so it's good to get that axe and shield so I have something other than just the figure.

I don't think the lasso is removable. At least, I haven't had the guts to force it yet.

Value: 4/5
$11 for a mass-production figure of this size is pretty much par for the course these days. The figure is solidly constructed and seems reasonably durable. I was concerned because of her spindly arm sculpt, but I think she'll be okay as long as you're careful.

Coolness: 3/5
It's great to have Wonder Woman to fill out the DC big-three roster. Also, the more female superheroes the better (especially those with costumes as cool as WW); they do a great job of diversifying a superhero collection.

But the main thing that takes away from the coolness is that she seems a bit too tall compared to Batman and Superman. I get the whole Amazon thing, but there's no way she should be taller than both of them.

As a side note, WW is cool in that you can envision her as a preview of a possible MOTU Classics Teela figure. We can only hope!

This isn't a bad figure. With a great likeness, dynamic articulation, and cool accessories, this Wonder Woman is a welcome addition to my DC superheroes collection. There are a few things that need help, like her gaudy creases and Amazonian height, but overall, she's worth the dough.
